Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — On 12 June 2025, The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) has successfully organised a remarkable technical visit to the iconic PNB Merdeka 118 Tower, offering members a rare opportunity to be among the earliest to explore the World Second Tallest building with the most technologically advanced buildings in the world.

This exclusive visit, organised by the Mechanical Engineering Technical Division (METD), provides all participants with an immersive experience into the engineering marvels that define Merdeka 118. Standing at an impressive 678.9 meters tall, this 118-storey skyscraper is not only a symbol of national pride architecture, but also a testament to modern engineering innovation.
A Tower Rooted in Heritage
Formerly known as Menara Warisan Merdeka, KL 118, and PNB Merdeka 118, the tower was officially completed in November 2023 and opened to the public on 10 January 2024. The spire, completed in December 2022, brought the structure to its full height, making it the second-tallest building in the world, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
The name “Merdeka,” meaning “independence” in Malay, pays homage to its location near the historic Stadium Merdeka, where Malaysia’s independence was declared.
Engineering Innovation on Full Display
PNB Merdeka 118 is the first green building in Malaysia that has achieved triple platinum certifications from LEED, GreenRE, and the Green Building Index (GBI). This green building designation means the project focuses on energy optimisation, water efficiency, and resource efficiency, aiming to minimise environmental impact and improve the health and well-being of tenants and the community. The building is designed with efficient sophisticated mechanical systems that support the operation of this megastructure. Among the key engineering features includes nonetheless the Advanced Cooling Systems, Grey Water Recycling, Fire Safety Protection, Water Treatment Systems, Gas Distribution Networks, and Vertical Elevation System. All these systems represent the pinnacle of sustainable and high-performance building design, ensuring efficiency, safety, and comfort across the entire complex.
An Unforgettable Experience

The day will begin with registration at Wisma IEM at 8:30 AM, followed by departure via chartered transportation to Merdeka 118 Tower. Upon arrival at the South Lobby or better known as the Minangkabau reception, all guests are usher to Level 86 for a welcome address and presentation by Y.M. Dato’ Tengku Abdul Aziz Tengku Mahmud, CEO of PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn. Bhd., supported by all technical specialists from the Facilities Management.

The session last for almost 90 minutes, it ended with an exchange of Visit Souvenir and Appreciation Token between CEO of PNB Merdeka Ventures and Chairman of METD, Ir. Dr. Ricky Liew representing IEM and METD. Participants then are taken for a trip to scale the highest accessible floor at Level 118, standing at the highest point of the city with an offering breathtaking panoramic view of Kuala Lumpur.
