ENGINEER Power Talk Highlights Engineering Pathway Towards Net Zero Energy Buildings

23 September 2026 – The ENGINEER Power Talk: Industry by IEM (ENETD) featured a technical presentation titled “Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB): Engineering Pathway Towards Low-Carbon and Sustainable Facilities”, delivered by Ir. Noor Iziddin Abdullah Bin Haji Ghazali, CEO of UiTM Energy & Facilities under UiTM Holdings.

The session highlighted the need for an integrated approach to achieving Net Zero Energy Buildings, bringing together energy efficiency, engineering design, financial considerations, operations and governance. The presentation emphasised that energy demand should first be reduced through passive design, efficient ACMV systems, lighting optimisation and improved operating practices before renewable energy and storage solutions are introduced.

Particular attention was given to solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), with emphasis on proper demand assessment, technical readiness, regulatory requirements and clearly defined use cases. The session also explored energy audits, performance monitoring, lifecycle costing and financial considerations to ensure that NZEB projects are both technically viable and financially sustainable.

The presentation concluded with a practical 36-month implementation pathway, covering baseline assessment, design and procurement, implementation, and subsequent optimisation and verification. Engineers were highlighted as key players in integrating technical systems, managing risks and ensuring that net-zero initiatives deliver measurable energy, financial and environmental performance.

The session reinforced a central message: achieving net-zero buildings requires more than renewable energy installation. It requires a structured engineering approach that reduces demand, improves efficiency, integrates clean energy and continuously measures performance.
