Women Engineers Leading, Inspiring and Making an Impact

August is a month of reflection on leadership, contribution and nation-building. What better way to mark it than by celebrating women engineers who are leading, inspiring and making an impact in their respective fields?

Heartiest congratulations to Ir. Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Serene Lock Sow Mun on being recognised with the BEM Anugerah Tokoh Muda Kejuruteraan Negara 2026 (Young National Engineering Icon Award 2026). The award recognises outstanding young engineers who demonstrate professional excellence, leadership and meaningful contributions to the engineering profession and society. Her recognition is particularly significant as she becomes the first woman to receive this distinction.

Congratulations also to Ir. Irene Lok Sow Mei, recipient of the BEM Special Mention International Engineering Award 2026, recognising engineering achievement with an international dimension and highlighting the ability of Malaysian engineers to make an impact beyond our shores.

These two ladies received their awards from YB Dato Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Menteri Kerja Raya; Dato’ Ir. Ibrahim bin Esa, President of the Board of Engineers Malaysia, and Ir. Dr. Sherliza binti Zaini Sooria, Board Member of at the Board of Engineers Malaysia during the Majlis Anugerah Kejuruteraan dan Penghargaan Lembaga Jurutera Malaysia Board held on 23 Aug 2026.

Adding to these achievements, a special congratulations to Ir. Dr. Mah Siew Kien on her appointment to the INWES (International Network of Women Engineers & Scientists) Board of Directors as Vice President (External Relations), taking on an important leadership role within the international women in engineering community.

These recognitions are more than individual accolades. They are reminders that leadership is not defined simply by position or title, but by contribution, influence and the willingness to create opportunities for others.

As we celebrate these remarkable women, may their journeys inspire more women engineers to step forward, lead with purpose and shape the future of our profession.
