The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), through its Electrical Engineering Technical Division (EETD), in collaboration with Novaris Technologies (M) Sdn. Bhd., successfully organised the Surge Protection Masterclass: From Standards to Real-World Practice on 15 July 2026 at Le Méridien Petaling Jaya. The event brought together around 100 engineers and industry professionals to gain practical insights into surge protection technologies and their applications.
The Masterclass featured two distinguished speakers from Novaris. Mr. Phillip Tompson, Managing Director, shared his extensive experience in lightning and surge protection, including updates on the latest IEC 61643 standards. Ms. Josephine Winnie, Solutions Architect, complemented the sessions with practical perspectives on surge protection design, installation challenges, and cost-effective implementation strategies for modern electrical systems.
The programme covered key topics including the selection of Surge Protective Devices (SPDs), overcurrent protection, cable inductance effects, installation best practices, and an interactive discussion session. Participants benefited from the speakers’ wealth of industry experience and practical case studies, reinforcing the importance of translating engineering standards into effective real-world solutions.
