“The journey to becoming a Professional Engineer (PE) may seem intimidating — but with the right guidance, the path becomes clearer, more strategic, and far more achievable.”
That was the spirit of Route to PE: Your Pathway to Becoming a Professional Engineer, the first pre-event in the exciting lead-up to the IEM x Sunway YES Open Day 3.0, happening this 5th July 2025.
Held on 30 March 2025 (Friday) at Lecture Theatre 4, Sunway University, the sharing session drew 20 eager students, fresh graduates, and even lecturers — all ready to uncover the real roadmap to becoming a PE.

The session was led by Ir. Dr. Lee Yun Fook, Executive Director at Sepakat Setia Perunding and a Professional Engineer with deep roots in civil and infrastructure engineering.
Drawing from nearly two decades of experience leading large-scale infrastructure and water treatment projects — including landmark developments like the Jelutong CSTP and Bunus CSTP — Dr. Lee brought more than just theory. His session offered students real, applicable insight into what it takes to navigate the route toward PE status. From logbook preparation to the importance of mentorship and how to approach the Professional Interview (PI), his advice was rooted in practice, not just policy.
His involvement in the IEM Professional Interview Development Subcommittee and as a mentor and assessor under both IEM and BEM systems added another layer of depth — giving attendees a rare behind-the-scenes view into how professional competency is assessed.

Throughout the talk, students gained clarity on:
- The purpose and significance of becoming a Professional Engineer
- The procedures and steps involved under IEM
- Enhanced vs conventional PI systems, and how to prepare for them
- The role of training, ethics, and practical experience
- Common pitfalls and misconceptions — and how to avoid them
The interactive Q&A session was particularly engaging, with participants asking candid, thoughtful questions about timelines, challenges, and personal development.

The Route to Professional Engineer sharing session wasn’t just a standalone talk — it marked a meaningful kickoff to the IEM x Sunway YES Open Day 3.0 campaign, setting the tone for what’s to come.
Participants left the room not only with a solid grasp of the PE journey — from logbooks and mentorship to the realities of the Professional Interview — but also with a clearer vision of how to map out their future in the engineering profession. Through the practical guidance and candid insights shared by Ir. Dr. Lee Yun Fook, the event delivered both technical clarity and personal motivation.
As we look ahead to 5 July 2025, excitement builds for the main event: the IEM x Sunway YES Open Day 3.0 — a career fair and industry showcase bringing together top engineering and tech companies, hands-on resume opportunities, and networking with professionals and recruiters.
If Route to PE is any indication, YES Open Day 3.0 is not just another event on the calendar — it’s where engineering students take real steps toward their future.
