The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia – Young Engineers Section (IEM YES) proudly participated in the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) Young Members Committee (YMC) International Young Engineers Exchange (IYEE) 2025, held from March 7 to March 8, 2025. Representing IEM YES at this prestigious event were Lim Yiren, Loo Suk Sin, Teoh Chi Yang, and Chuah Pei Lim. This year’s exchange coincided with the HKIE YMC 40th Anniversary Flagship Event, which featured the International Young Engineers Exchange Forum, a recognized event under World Engineering Day. The program provided a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and networking among young engineers from Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Germany, focusing on the future of engineering, smart city development, and sustainability.
Day 1: International Young Engineers Exchange Forum & Collaboration Discussions
The event commenced with the International Young Engineers Exchange Forum, focusing on three key themes:
- Unity: Engineering Our Smart City
- Empowerment: New Quality Productive Forces
- Connection: Grow the Nexus, Link the Links
The forum featured insightful presentations by industry leaders, including:
- Ir. Alex Wan (Managing Director, Smart Solutions and Advanced Engineering, WSP Asia) – Data Empowering Excellence
- Mr. Anderson Leung (Director, Works and Contracts, Urban Renewal Authority) – Engineering Our Smart City – Urban Renewal Context
- Ir. Don Cheng (COO, Hong Kong Business, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited) – New Energy for Sustainable Development
- Ir. Tom Pang (Senior VP, Hong Kong Telecommunications Limited) – Resilient Telecom Infrastructure to Support Hong Kong’s Economic Growth
- Dr. Charles Cheung (Deputy Director, NVIDIA) – What’s Next for Generative AI?
- Ir. Henry Chan (Senior Manager – Systems Engineering, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited) – Power Quality Enhancement through CLP-Customer Cooperation
- Dr Neo Chan (Director – Vircon Limited) – Digital Transformation in Construction

A highlight of the session was the participation of IEM YES Chairman, Lim Yiren, who was invited as a speaker to share insights on Global Collaboration in Engineering Smart Cities, reinforcing IEM YES’s role in driving international cooperation in smart city development.

Following the forum, a Closed-door Meeting was held among key engineering organizations, including Verein Deutscher Ingenieure, VDI (Germany), Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia, PII (Indonesia), Institution of Engineers, Singapore, IES (Singapore), The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia, IEM (Malaysia), Chinese Institute of Engineers, CIE (Taiwan), and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, HKIE (Hong Kong). Discussions centered on potential collaborations and future initiatives to strengthen international engineering ties.

The day concluded with a Cocktail Reception celebrating the 40th anniversary of HKIE YMC, providing an excellent networking opportunity for delegates to foster new connections and exchange ideas in a more informal setting. The participants got to connect with others; at the same time, sharing insight on their own country’s development.

Day 2: Technical Visit & Team Building Activity
On March 8, participants embarked on a technical visit to Tai Shui Hang, where they explored the Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns. This ambitious infrastructure project showcased the innovative approach of relocating a major sewage treatment plant into caverns, requiring controlled explosions and advanced engineering techniques to clear space for construction. The visit provided valuable insights into the complexity and sustainability of urban infrastructure projects. It also showcased the usage of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the application of BIM Cave, 4D Simulation and Energy Efficiency Analysis.

In the afternoon, delegates engaged in a Dragon Boat team-building activity, an exhilarating experience that fostered teamwork and friendships among international participants. With pleasant weather conditions, the event served as both a cultural immersion and a platform for collaboration beyond professional discussions.

Conclusion
IEM YES’s participation in HKIE YMC IYEE 2025 was a resounding success, strengthening our international presence while fostering valuable discussions on engineering innovation, sustainability, and collaboration. The exchange of ideas with esteemed professionals and engineering bodies worldwide has opened doors for future partnerships, reinforcing our commitment to global engagement and continuous learning.
Moving forward, IEM YES looks forward to furthering the collaborations initiated at this event, ensuring that young engineers continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of engineering on a global scale.
