The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) recently conducted an exclusive interview with its incoming President, Ir. Yau Chau Fong, on 4th April 2026 at Bangunan Ingenieur. The interview was conducted by Ir. Alex Looi, an IEM Council Member, providing an engaging platform to gain insights into the President’s vision, priorities, and aspirations for the Institution in the upcoming term.
During the session, Ir. Yau shared his leadership philosophy and presidential theme, which will serve as a guiding framework in addressing current challenges and opportunities within the engineering profession. He outlined key strategic priorities for IEM, focusing on both immediate and long-term initiatives aimed at strengthening the Institution’s role in a rapidly evolving landscape shaped by digitalisation, sustainability, and emerging technologies.
A key highlight of the discussion was IEM IMPACT 2030, an integrated strategic framework designed to ensure that IEM remains relevant, influential, and trusted in a rapidly changing engineering and national landscape. Guided by six strategic pillars, IMPACT 2030 aligns people, programmes, and processes around a common direction, enabling IEM to better serve its members, strengthen its influence at the national level, and lead the engineering profession confidently into the future.
The discussion also emphasised the importance of enhancing member engagement and delivering greater value across all membership categories. In addition, Ir. Yau highlighted the need to foster stronger collaboration among engineering practitioners, while expanding both regional and international partnerships. Financial sustainability and institutional resilience were also identified as key areas of focus to ensure IEM’s continued growth and relevance.
Reflecting on his professional journey, Ir. Yau acknowledged the experiences and influences that have shaped his leadership path. He also shared his perspectives on the challenges ahead and the legacy he hopes to establish during his presidency.
