When the IEM Young Engineers Section held its first National Summit in 2007, nobody in the room could have known that the gathering would still be running two decades later. NATSUM 2026, hosted by IEM Southern Branch at TROVE Hotel Johor Bahru from 30 July to 2 August, marked the twentieth edition of that summit. It was a fitting place to hold it. Johor Bahru has become one of the busiest engineering landscapes in the country, and the third time the state has hosted NATSUM found it a considerably different city from the one delegates saw in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The theme this year was “A Gateway to Growth, A Hub of Innovation, and A Beacon of Engineering Excellence”, and the programme was built to earn it rather than simply announce it. Delegates arriving early on the first day were taken to the ICP Piles plant in Senai and to Leviat in Senai Airport City, where the discussion turned on mechanical joint connections in spun piles and on rebar processing to ISO 15835. On the second morning the summit convened at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for the opening ceremony and a technical sharing session, and on the afternoon of that day delegates visited Menara MBJB. Between a manufacturing floor, a specialist systems supplier and a municipal building operator, the three visits covered a wider span of practice than a young engineer would ordinarily see in a single week, let alone a single summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The point of NATSUM has never been only the technical content, however. It is the one occasion in the year when the Section meets itself in full \u2014 branch committees, student sections and headquarters in the same room. That meeting took place on the morning of 31 July, and it carried the summit’s most consequential item of business. The Young Engineers Fund guideline, on which the branches had reached consent at the interbranch meeting on 11 July, was signed. The guideline replaces the older National Summit Fund arrangement with a revolving seed fund: a branch applies to headquarters for an advance sized to the scale of its project, from a modest sum for an internal activity up to a larger allocation for an international one, and returns the advance after the event together with a growth contribution. It now proceeds to the Finance Standing Committee and to IEM Excomm, with commencement targeted for the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n

It is worth saying plainly why this matters. The most common reason a good branch proposal never becomes an event is not a shortage of ideas or of willing volunteers. It is that somebody has to carry the cost before the first sponsor pays, and young engineers are rarely in a position to do that. A revolving fund removes that particular obstacle without turning the Section into a grant-giving body, since the money comes back and grows. Whether it works will be visible soon enough in what the branches attempt next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The remainder of the programme did what such programmes should. Delegates spent the third morning at Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Street on team-building activities, and the afternoon delivering a community contribution alongside branch representatives \u2014 the sort of thing that is easy to describe as a box-ticking exercise and is not, when the people doing it are the same people who will run the Section’s activities for the next two years. The evening closed with the IEM YES Dinner and Recognition Night, where the term’s outstanding branches and volunteers were acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n

Our thanks go to the organising chairman, Jason Yap Jian Yang, and his committee, whose work was evident throughout; to IEM Southern Branch and its chairman, Ir. Two of the three technical visits were hosted by sponsoring companies, an arrangement that gave those partners something more substantial than a logo on a backdrop and gave delegates access they would not otherwise have had. Future host branches would do well to copy it.<\/p>\n\n\n
